Printing a QR code sounds straightforward, but many factors can compromise readability once the code is on paper, fabric or any other physical medium. This guide covers resolution best practices, file format selection and medium choice to ensure your QR code scans perfectly under all conditions.

Choosing the right file format

For professional printing, always export your QR code in SVG or EPS vector format. These formats maintain perfect sharpness at any print size, from a business card to a 4 by 3 metre billboard. If you must use a bitmap, choose PNG at a minimum of 300 DPI at the final print dimensions. JPEG is not recommended because its lossy compression can blur module edges.

Print media and constraints

On standard paper, use at least 170 gsm stock to avoid show-through that could interfere with scanning. For textile printing (t-shirts, tote bags), screen printing or DTF offers better sharpness than heat transfer. On metal or plastic, make sure the surface is not overly reflective, as glare disrupts smartphone camera reading.

Positioning and quiet zone

Maintain a quiet zone at least four modules wide around the QR code. Never place the code on a textured background, an image or across a fold. On a leaflet, position the QR code on a panel that lies flat when the leaflet is set down. On cylindrical packaging, ensure the code is visible without having to rotate the object.

Testing before production

Before committing to a full print run, produce a proof and test the scan with at least five different smartphones (recent iPhone, older iPhone, high-end Android, budget Android and a tablet). Test under varying lighting conditions: daylight, fluorescent, dim. If the scan fails under any of these conditions, increase the code size or contrast before approving the production run.
